Few Long Island bands can claim to have the reputation for brilliance that the Underdogs earned over their long lived career. Although the observance of this band can only be considered a tribute in retrospect, their formula for survival and passion for their music can only be recognized as nothing short of rare.
The music scene on Long Island in the mid to late eighties was in a desperate state. With MTV draining music of it's ability to display its own vision and the industry being over saturated, it was nearly impossible for a band living in the shadow of "the big apple" to gain notoriety. Although the Island spawned a modest roster of success stories, few came close to breaking through the commercial format that had already taken over the minds of the individual. Free expression in music was becoming a thing of the past. More importantly, it was left up to the the established bands of the sixties and seventies to carry the torch.
